Kaizer Chiefs hold Mamelodi Sundowns to 1-1 draw in tense FNB Stadium encounter

Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns shared the points after a tense 1-1 draw at FNB Stadium in the Betway Premiership, with both sides producing a far more engaging contest after half-time.

The result keeps Chiefs top of the standings with seven points from their opening three league matches. Fernando da Cruz’s side can take considerable confidence from matching a star-studded Sundowns team that included players who won the Champions League last season and represented Bafana Bafana at the 2026 Fifa World Cup in the United States and Mexico.

The opening half was short on quality and attacking threat, with both teams undermined by poor decision-making in possession. The match’s first meaningful attack did not arrive until the 40th minute, leaving the supporters frustrated.

Chiefs came closest first when they won a free-kick just outside the penalty area. Thabo Moloisane, making his first appearance in Amakhosi colours, met the delivery with a close-range header, but it went straight at Ronwen Williams.

Sundowns responded with a swift counter-attack. Khuliso Mudau sent a dangerous ball towards the area for Brayan Leon, but Zitha Kwinika intervened to clear the cross before the striker could take advantage.

Chiefs had another opportunity 10 minutes after the restart when Thabiso Monyane failed to control the ball in a promising position. Williams recovered quickly to clear the danger, although Sundowns conceded another free-kick on the edge of the area in the process. Lebohang Maboe’s effort failed to hit the target.

The game finally shifted into life after the interval, perhaps following strong words from both coaches, Da Cruz and Miguel Cardoso.

Chiefs took control and went ahead after 62 minutes through Langelihle Phili, who announced himself to the Amakhosi supporters with an impressive finish. Siphesihle Ndlovu beat Grant Kekana and Bathusi Aubaas before setting up Phili inside the box.

Phili controlled the ball before sending a low shot past Williams at the near post, sparking loud celebrations around the stadium. The goal was the attacker’s first for Chiefs and he removed his shirt in the emotion of the moment, earning a yellow card. Da Cruz substituted him a few minutes later to avoid the possibility of a second booking and subsequent red card.

Sundowns found an equaliser nine minutes later through Cassius Mailula, who appeared to make an immediate impact after coming off the bench. Mudau launched a long ball into the penalty area, Kekana redirected it towards Mailula and the striker headed beyond Brandon Petersen, who was unable to react quickly enough.

The goal could prove significant for Mailula, who is returning to Sundowns after a frustrating spell in the United States and Europe. His display suggested he may have an important role to play for the Brazilians.

Cardoso will nevertheless have concerns about Sundowns’ first-half performance. They struggled to impose themselves, lacked control and created few clear-cut chances. Their defensive organisation was also exposed by Chiefs’ opening goal, with the back line failing to close down advancing opponents before they reached the penalty area.

Both coaches made several changes as the match progressed. Da Cruz introduced Wandile Duba, Ethan Chislett and Adolf Mtasingwa in place of Luke Baartman, Phili and Maboe, but the substitutions did not give Chiefs sustained control.

Cardoso brought on Siyanda Ndlovu, Bennet Mokoena, Mailula, Divine Lunga and Lebogang Mothiba for Antonio van Wyk, Sphelele Mkhulise, Tashreeq Matthews, Aubrey Modiba and Brayan Leon.

Da Cruz had also reshaped his team before kick-off, leaving Reeve Frosler and Dillan Solomons out of the starting line-up and selecting Moloisane. Chiefs operated with a back three of Moloisane, Inacio Miguel and Kwinika, while Monyane and Pule Mmodi provided width as wing-backs.

Sibongiseni Mthethwa, Siphesihle Ndlovu and Maboe formed a more defensive midfield intended to limit the influence of Marcelo Allende, Mkhulise and Aubaas.

Sundowns made two changes from their opening match against TS Galaxy, with Kekana and Modiba replacing Malibongwe Khoza and Fawaaz Basadien. Aubaas started because Teboho Mokoena was injured, while Van Wyk, Matthews and Leon led the attack.

Neither side could find a winning goal late on, leaving the heavyweights to settle for a point apiece after a dramatic second half.
