Kaizer Chiefs held by Stellenbosch as winless run reaches three games

Kaizer Chiefs extended their winless run to three matches after being held to a 1-1 draw by Stellenbosch FC in the Betway Premiership on Tuesday night.

Kwayiba put Stellenbosch in front three minutes after half-time before Mduduzi Shabalala equalised for the hosts 10 minutes later. The result was Kaizer Chiefs’ third consecutive league draw, although they remain unbeaten after eight matches.

Fernando da Cruz named a highly defensive side, starting six defenders and handing Paseko Mako his first start of the season. Shabalala, Mfundo Vilakazi and Wandile Duba were the only attacking players in the starting line-up.

Stellenbosch FC coach Gavin Hunt handed a debut to former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Njabulo Blom. Ashley du Preez started against his former club, replacing Bradley Grobler.

The match began at an energetic pace, but the first significant opportunity came after 20 minutes. Kwayiba was released through on goal, only to see his effort strike the post with Renaldo Leaner beaten.

Kaizer Chiefs created their first clear chance 10 minutes later when Duba ran through on goal. However, Stellenbosch goalkeeper Sage Stephens came quickly off his line to deny the lively striker. It proved to be the home side’s last major opening before the interval.

Despite Kaizer Chiefs’ numbers at the back, Stellenbosch found space soon after the restart. Terrence Mashego was allowed to move through the centre and feed Kwayiba, who finished first time beyond Leaner to give the visitors the lead.

The advantage lasted only 10 minutes. A ball played over the top found Shabalala, who kept his composure to beat Stephens at the near post after a lapse in the Stellenbosch defence.

Da Cruz altered his attack with 25 minutes remaining, replacing Duba and Shabalala with Flavio da Silva and Ethan Chislett. The formation appeared to remain unchanged, with six defenders still on the field.

Kaizer Chiefs committed players forward in search of a late winner, but neither side was able to create another clear-cut chance. Stellenbosch FC held on for a point as the teams shared the spoils.

Kaizer Chiefs’ next five fixtures are away to Red Arrows, at home to Red Arrows, away to Orlando Pirates, at home to AmaZulu FC and away to Chippa United.

Stellenbosch FC will host Chippa United next, before travelling to Richards Bay. Their remaining listed fixtures are at home to TS Galaxy, away to Orlando Pirates and at home to Milford.
