Kaizer Chiefs’ Faiz Abrahams calls stunning free-kick the best goal of his career

Kaizer Chiefs forward Faiz Abrahams has described his spectacular free-kick against Siwelele FC as the best goal of his young career after it secured a dramatic 3-2 victory for Amakhosi.

The teenager found the net from an extremely tight angle in a thrilling contest, producing the winning goal as Chiefs returned to winning ways. His effort helped the club claim three points in a match that saw five goals scored.

Abrahams, who came through the ranks at Cape Flats club Valhalla United, is regarded as a player who generally chooses his words carefully. However, he was visibly delighted when reflecting on the moment that decided the game for the Bloemfontein-based side.

Speaking to KickOff after the match, Abrahams initially played down his individual contribution and stressed the importance of the team’s result.

“First of all, I think to walk away with the three points was the most important thing for us,” Abrahams said.

The young Kaizer Chiefs player then admitted that he was pleased to have made such a significant impact, particularly given the difficult position from which he had to attempt the free-kick.

“But I’m not going to lie, it felt good to make an impact and contribute to the team in such a manner. I knew I didn’t have much angle to work with and I had to whip the ball and get some bend on it, you know.”

His strike required both accuracy and technique, with Abrahams explaining that he had to generate enough curl to guide the ball towards goal despite the restricted angle.

When asked to assess the quality of the finish, the youngster placed it above every other goal he has scored since beginning his career.

“I think I could not have struck the ball any sweeter and cleaner… It was a magical moment indeed as I would rate it as the best goal I have scored in my career. But I’m just happy that the team could pick the three points and build on from here,” Abrahams concluded.

The result lifted Kaizer Chiefs into third place in the league standings on 11 points. Amakhosi are five points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns and two points adrift of second-placed Orlando Pirates.

Chiefs will now turn their attention to their next fixture, when they travel to Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday to face Polokwane City.

The win against Siwelele FC gives the club an opportunity to build momentum, while Abrahams’ free-kick is likely to remain the defining moment of the match. For the young forward, it also marked a personal milestone, providing a memorable contribution during a victory that was more important to him than the individual acclaim.
