Kaizer Chiefs face Rushwin Dortley dilemma before Soweto Derby

Kaizer Chiefs coach Fernando Da Cruz must decide whether Rushwin Dortley is ready to start in this afternoon’s first Soweto Derby of the season against Orlando Pirates at FNB Stadium.

The left-sided centre-back returned to competitive action in the Carling Knockout Cup last-16 tie against TS Galaxy, having not played since the 2024/25 season. Dortley completed the full 90 minutes as Amakhosi secured a 3-0 victory and kept a clean sheet.

His performance demonstrated his quality in possession, but the derby will present a significantly more demanding test. The match is expected to be played at high intensity, while Orlando Pirates have a number of quick attacking players who could place Dortley under considerable pressure after his lengthy absence.

Da Cruz therefore faces a major selection decision: whether to show faith in Dortley from the start or use a more cautious option in central defence.

Brandon Petersen is expected to retain his place in goal, with Reeve Frosler, Thabo Moloisane and Paseka Mako also expected to feature in the defensive line. If Dortley is not selected, Inacio Miguel could come into the team. Miguel was not included in the matchday squad for the win against TS Galaxy.

Sibongiseni Mthethwa and Lebohang Maboe are tipped to form the central midfield partnership, while Mduduzi Shabalala could operate in the number 10 role.

Mfundo Vilakazi and Pule Mmodi are the leading candidates to start on the wings for Kaizer Chiefs. Up front, Wandile Duba is expected to lead the attack after scoring a hat-trick against TS Galaxy, who were also referred to as The Rockets, in the Carling Knockout Cup victory.

The predicted Kaizer Chiefs XI is: Brandon Petersen; Reeve Frosler, Thabo Moloisane, Inacio Miguel, Paseka Mako; Sibongseni Mthethwa, Lebohang Maboe; Pule Mmodi, Mfundo Vilakazi, Mduduzi Shabalala; Wandile Duba.
