Kaizer Chiefs defender Reece Frosler faces spell out with hamstring injury
Kaizer Chiefs have been dealt a significant injury setback after utility defender Reece Frosler suffered a torn hamstring.
The South Africa international is expected to spend a brief period on the sidelines, although the injury is understood to be a Grade 2 tear. That offers some encouragement to Chiefs, with Frosler potentially able to return after the MTN8 semi-finals.
Frosler had made an impressive start to the season at left-back, despite usually operating on the right side of defence. His flexibility had also been valuable during pre-season, when he was used in a central defensive role.
That versatility had pleased head coach Fernando da Cruz, who viewed Frosler as an important option within his tactical system. His injury, however, has intensified an already serious problem at left-back for the club.
Nkanyiso Shinga, Paseka Mako and Bradley Cross were already unavailable before Frosler was injured. Chiefs then suffered another setback when Kabelo Nkgwesa, who had been brought in as Frosler’s replacement, also picked up an injury.
The succession of injuries left Da Cruz with little choice but to alter his defensive structure for the match against Mamelodi Sundowns. The French coach selected a five-man defence and used Pule Mmodi as an emergency left wing-back.
Chiefs drew 1-1 with Mamelodi Sundowns, with Da Cruz explaining afterwards that the club had been particularly unfortunate in the left-back position.
“All the left-backs are injured,” he stated after the 1-1 draw.
“We were unlucky in the last few days in the left full-back position. Between the Sekhukhune United game and today [Saturday], we lost two more players to injury, who are Reeve [Frosler] and Kabelo [Nkgwesa].”
The wording of Da Cruz’s comments highlighted the rapid worsening of Chiefs’ injury situation. Frosler and Nkgwesa were the latest players to become unavailable in a position where the team had already been short of established options.
It remains unclear whether the five-man defensive line will become a longer-term solution or was introduced only to deal with the immediate circumstances against Mamelodi Sundowns.
Da Cruz must now decide how to reorganise his defence while Chiefs wait for their injured left-backs to recover. The extent of Frosler’s hamstring problem means he will miss a period of action, but the possibility of a return after the MTN8 semi-finals provides the club with a more positive outlook than a severe injury would have done.
Until then, Chiefs face a difficult balancing act at the position, with Frosler’s ability to play in several defensive roles no longer available to the coach.
