Kaizer Chiefs boss Da Cruz confirms Lilepo exit talks as Cele left out of plans

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando Da Cruz has confirmed that Glody Lilepo is in discussions over a move away from the club, while Thabo Cele has been told he is not part of the plans for the 2026-27 Betway Premiership season.

The French coach, who is reshaping his squad during pre-season, said winger Lilepo is already exploring options to leave Naturena, and that midfielder Cele has effectively been made available as Chiefs look to streamline their midfield options.

Lilepo joined Amakhosi from French club Valenciennes and made a strong early impression, scoring 15 goals and providing five assists in 56 appearances across all competitions. However, Da Cruz indicated the Democratic Republic of Congo international is now likely to continue his career elsewhere.

“Lilepo has opportunities to move elsewhere, so the club is currently helping him explore those opportunities,” said Da Cruz.

Chiefs are due to face Zimbabwean side Scottland FC in the Toyota Cup on Sunday, with Da Cruz putting the final touches to his squad ahead of that match and the new league campaign.

Cele surplus to requirements

While Lilepo appears close to the exit, Da Cruz was equally clear on Cele’s situation, confirming that the midfielder does not fit the profile he wants in that position for the coming season.

“I’ve got a lot of players in Thabo Cele’s position. I prefer a different type of player in his position and he’s not in my plans for this season,” he said.

Cele’s omission reflects the depth Chiefs believe they already have in central areas, with Da Cruz prioritising different attributes as he looks to impose his own style on the team.

Squad overhaul continues at Naturena

Da Cruz’s comments highlight the scale of the ongoing rebuild at Kaizer Chiefs, as the new technical team attempts to construct a squad capable of ending the club’s run without silverware in the league.

Chiefs made a fast start in the Betway Premiership last season and will be aiming to replicate that when the new campaign begins next month. The club is using the current pre-season period to refine the squad and ensure that only those players firmly in the coach’s plans remain.

With the transfer window still open, both Lilepo and Cele are now expected to draw interest from other clubs as they seek regular first-team football away from Naturena before the Betway Premiership season gets under way.
