Manchester United step up interest in Christian Kofane ahead of January window
Manchester United have made an enquiry about Bayer Leverkusen forward Christian Kofane as the club begins to explore a potential move for the highly rated striker ahead of the January transfer window.
The 20-year-old has emerged as a target for several major European clubs after impressing in the Bundesliga, with Arsenal, Newcastle United, Everton, Aston Villa and Bayern Munich also reported to have shown interest in the Cameroon international.
United have now joined the growing list of admirers, with reports claiming the Premier League giants have contacted Kofane’s representatives to establish the conditions required for a possible January deal.
The approach comes at a time when Kofane’s contract situation at Leverkusen has attracted attention. Although his current agreement runs until 2029, talks over an improved contract have reportedly stalled, creating an opportunity for interested clubs to assess whether they can prise him away from the Bundesliga side.
United test the waters
Manchester United’s enquiry is understood to be exploratory, with the club seeking clarity on Kofane’s situation and the potential terms of a deal before deciding whether to step up their interest during the winter window.
Kofane has previously indicated that he is not desperate to leave Leverkusen for the Premier League despite acknowledging the appeal of English football.
Speaking in August, the forward said: “I can certainly imagine it, yes. It’s one of the best leagues in the world.”
However, Kofane stressed that he wanted to continue developing at Leverkusen rather than rushing into a move.
“But I want to take it step by step. I’m young and still have big plans with Bayer Leverkusen,” he added.
Kofane also made clear his appreciation for the Bundesliga club and the role it has played in his development.
“Bayer Leverkusen a great club that has given me a great opportunity and a lot of confidence. I feel very comfortable here.”
Kofane’s form driving interest
The forward’s performances have strengthened his reputation and attracted attention from some of Europe’s biggest clubs.
Kofane made 29 Bundesliga appearances last season, scoring five goals and providing four assists. He has continued that progress at the start of the current campaign, finding the net twice in four league appearances.
His early-season form has only increased speculation surrounding his future, particularly with several clubs monitoring his situation.
Leverkusen are understood to be keen to secure Kofane’s long-term future and have reportedly held talks over a new contract that would extend his commitment to the club until 2031.
Leverkusen face fight to keep striker
Reports claim the Bundesliga outfit want to increase Kofane’s annual salary to more than £3 million as part of the proposed new agreement.
However, the growing interest from England and elsewhere could complicate Leverkusen’s efforts to secure his long-term commitment.
For United, the initial enquiry represents an opportunity to gather more information about a player who fits the profile of a young forward with considerable room for development.
With the January window approaching, Kofane’s contract negotiations and continued performances will determine whether interest from United and his other suitors develops into formal offers.
