Kaizer Chiefs and Thabo Cele agree mutual termination of midfielder’s contract

Kaizer Chiefs have agreed to terminate Thabo Cele’s contract by mutual consent, allowing the midfielder to leave the club and pursue new opportunities.

The decision was confirmed after “constructive discussions” between the two parties, as Kaizer Chiefs continue to reshape their squad ahead of the 2026/27 season.

Cele, who has not played for Amakhosi this season, was also absent from the club’s pre-season tour of Spain. His departure brings an end to an 18-month spell with the South African club.

“Kaizer Chiefs have terminated Thabo Cele’s contract by mutual agreement, following constructive discussions between both parties,” the club said in a statement.

“The decision will allow Cele to pursue new opportunities while Amakhosi continue to reshape their squad for the 2026/27 season.”

Cele joined the Glamour Boys in January 2025 after gaining international experience in Europe and representing the South African national team.

The KwaMashu-born midfielder made his Kaizer Chiefs debut in the Soweto Derby the following month, marking the beginning of his time with one of South Africa’s most prominent clubs.

During his spell at Kaizer Chiefs, Cele made 36 appearances across domestic and CAF competitions. He also won the Nedbank Cup with the club, four months after completing his move.

The midfielder’s exit had been the subject of speculation after he was left out of the team’s plans at the start of the new season. Kaizer Chiefs have now formally confirmed that his contract has been ended, bringing clarity to his immediate future.

The club thanked Cele for his contribution and wished him well in the next stage of his career.

“We thank ‘Induna Yendawo’ for his commitment during his time at Kaizer Chiefs and wish him the very best in his future career,” the statement added.

Cele’s departure is part of the wider process of squad reconstruction under way at Kaizer Chiefs as the club prepares for the 2026/27 campaign. His time at the club included appearances in both South African competitions and CAF fixtures, as well as the Nedbank Cup triumph secured shortly after his arrival.

His next club has not been announced.
