Junior Olaitan makes instant European impact as Besiktas’s latest Benin breakthrough

Junior Olaitan announced himself on the European stage with two assists in Besiktas’s 4-1 victory over Olympique de Marseille, strengthening his reputation as one of the early-season revelations in Turkey. The 24-year-old midfielder has made a rapid impression since joining the club and is now emerging as an increasingly important figure for both club and country.

From Ayema FC to French football

Olaitan began his development at Ayema FC in Benin before moving to France at a young age to continue his football education. Chamois Niort provided his first experience of French football, followed by spells at Troyes and Grenoble.

Those three clubs helped him develop as a midfielder and adapt to the demands of the French game. His progress followed a familiar but solid route for a young player arriving in Europe from West Africa.

Goztepe move raised his profile

Olaitan took a significant step forward in the summer of 2025 when he moved to Turkey to play for Goztepe. His time there increased his visibility and showed that he could adapt to a more demanding league than those he had previously experienced in France.

During his spell with Goztepe, the Benin international made 18 appearances and scored two goals.

A €5m move to Besiktas

Besiktas completed a deal for the attacking midfielder this summer, with the transfer estimated at 5 million euros. The fee reflected the change in status for the player, who had moved to one of the historic clubs in the Turkish championship.

His start in Istanbul has suggested that he is settling quickly. Despite the greater expectations at his new club, the Porto-Novo-born midfielder has already provided six assists in 12 matches.

Statement performance against Olympique de Marseille

Olaitan’s most significant moment so far came in his first European appearance, against Olympique de Marseille. Named in the starting line-up, he played for 82 minutes and had 59 touches, underlining his involvement in Besiktas’s build-up and attacking play.

His contribution was particularly effective in the final third. He supplied two assists, created three big chances and completed 82% of his passes as Besiktas secured a convincing 4-1 win.

Established with Benin

Olaitan’s club progress has been matched by his growing responsibility with the national team. Although he is only 24, the player developed at Ayema FC has already won 40 caps for Benin and scored five goals.

That record reflects the trust placed in him by the Guepards and the consistency of his development as his role has expanded at international level.

Olaitan is under contract in Turkey until 2029, while his current market value is estimated at 7 million euros by Transfermarkt.

Besiktas will soon play their sixth league match of the season against Amed SK.
