Julian Alvarez’s Atletico future reaches crossroads after Villarreal jeers

Atletico de Madrid are considering a difficult decision over Julian Alvarez’s future as tensions between the Argentina striker and the club’s supporters continue to grow, with Arsenal understood to be the preferred destination if the Spanish side decides to sell.

Spanish newspaper Sport, citing The Athletic, reports that Atletico could be willing to part with Alvarez for about €150m. The Madrid club are said to favour a move to London, while their strained relationship with Barcelona means they are unwilling to consider fresh proposals from the Catalan side.

Alvarez endured a difficult evening during Atletico’s meeting with Villarreal at the Metropolitano. He was booed by sections of the home support and, as he left the pitch, a scarf was thrown at him from the stands. The incidents highlighted the depth of the dispute surrounding the forward.

Atletico head coach Diego Simeone is reportedly uncomfortable with the situation. He remains keen to help Alvarez rediscover his best form, given the striker’s importance to the team when performing at his highest level, but recognises that continuing under such intense pressure could prove difficult.

The club have a brief opportunity to move away from the immediate spotlight, with three successive away fixtures against Sevilla, Athletic Club and Real Sociedad. However, the controversy may not disappear quickly, particularly because of the anger among Atletico supporters over previous reports linking Alvarez with a move to Barcelona.

That background has made Arsenal the most welcome option from Atletico’s perspective should a transfer go ahead. A move to the Premier League club is viewed in Madrid as the most suitable way to bring the dispute to an end. Arsenal’s decision, however, would depend on whether they are prepared to pay a fee that could reach €150m.

The north London club are considering several forwards in the transfer market, including Nigeria international Victor Osimhen, meaning their interest in Alvarez does not automatically guarantee a deal.

Atletico would also need to act quickly if the 25-year-old leaves. The club would have to find a replacement striker, with the lack of attacking alternatives exposed against Villarreal when Alexander Sørloth was unavailable through injury.

Barcelona’s pursuit of Alvarez appears even more complicated. Atletico have pointed to a €500m release clause, while Barcelona previously made a €100m offer that was rejected, followed by another proposal worth slightly more.

The Catalan club regard Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martinez as an alternative, but that move would also be difficult. Inter remain determined to keep their captain, with head coach Cristian Chivu and president Giuseppe Marotta both stressing how hard it would be to let him go at the start of the season.

Barcelona may therefore have to hope sporting director Deco can find an unexpected solution or rely on the attacking options already at the club. For Alvarez, the uncertainty currently leaves three possible outcomes: staying at Atletico under continuing pressure, joining Arsenal in a major transfer, or waiting for circumstances to reopen the door to Barcelona.
