Juan Sebastian Veron, 51, vows Estudiantes comeback if club hits 100,000 members

Juan Sebastian Veron has promised to come out of retirement at the age of 51 and play an official match for Estudiantes if the Argentine club reaches 100,000 registered members.

The Estudiantes president, who ended his professional career wearing the La Plata side’s colours, said he is ready to lace up his boots again on one clear condition linked to the club’s season-ticket and membership drive.

Responding to a supporter’s question, Veron said: “When the number of members reaches 100,000, I will train to play an official match at UNO University (the name of the team’s stadium).”

Veron, one of Argentina’s best‐known midfielders of his generation, currently oversees Estudiantes from the boardroom, but his latest pledge raises the prospect of a return to the pitch more than a decade after his initial retirement.

Repeat of 2017 promise

This is not the first time Veron has tied a comeback to a commercial or fan-engagement target.

He first retired in 2014, before returning to action in 2017 after making a similar promise to supporters connected to Estudiantes’ new stadium. On that occasion, Veron vowed to end his retirement if 65% of the seats in the new ground’s boxes were sold – a target the club went on to achieve.

Honouring that commitment, Veron registered as a player again and featured in five matches for Estudiantes in the Copa Libertadores in 2017.

His latest pledge would see him return once more at 51, with the article indicating that the comeback could happen in 2026 or, at the latest, the following year, depending on when the membership threshold is reached.

Storied playing career

Before moving into club management and ultimately the presidency at Estudiantes, Veron enjoyed a decorated playing career in Argentina, Europe and with the national team.

He played for Boca Juniors in his homeland before moving to Europe, where he represented Sampdoria, Parma, Lazio, Manchester United, Chelsea and Inter. He also had four separate spells with Estudiantes, the club most closely associated with his name.

Veron was a key figure for Argentina over several years and later returned to Estudiantes to win domestic honours as both player and president.

Under his leadership off the pitch, Estudiantes won the Argentine league title in the 2025 season. That championship was the club’s first since 2010, when Veron himself lifted the trophy on the field as a player.

Now, with Estudiantes again enjoying success and Veron firmly established as club president, his latest promise offers fans the prospect of seeing him step out at UNO University one more time – provided they can collectively push membership figures to the 100,000 mark.
