Josue Caicedo makes immediate impact in Barcelona Atletic first appearance

Ecuadorian defender Josue Caicedo impressed on his debut for Barcelona Atletic as the reserve side secured their first win of pre-season with a 2-1 victory over L’Hospitalet in the L’Hospitalet City Cup.

The 18-year-old left-back was introduced for Landry Ferri and played the final 30 minutes, offering a composed display at both ends of the pitch. His performance provided an encouraging first glimpse of the player after his move to Barcelona from Ecuadorian club LDU Quito.

Barcelona Atletic’s victory was secured by goals from Ignasi Quer and Shane Kluivert. The result ended a difficult start to their preparations, having previously lost 2-1 to Union Esportiva Tona and drawn 1-1 with Girona.

Although Caicedo was on the pitch for only half an hour, he made a positive impression with his defensive work and willingness to contribute in attack. According to Catalan newspaper Mundo Deportivo, he was particularly effective when pressing opponents and winning the ball back after possession had been lost.

He also showed an ability to protect the left side of the pitch while supporting Barcelona Atletic’s forward play, suggesting he can offer the team balance from the full-back position.

Caicedo’s first appearance came after his arrival in Barcelona was delayed by bureaucratic procedures. That delay meant Brazilian head coach Juliano Belletti had to wait before selecting him, but the defender was eventually given his opportunity against L’Hospitalet.

The player formally signed his contract with the club the following day. The ceremony was attended by Jose Ramon Alexanco, Barcelona’s director of youth football.

Belletti said Caicedo would need to continue building his confidence before the competitive season begins.

“We know what he is like, and little by little he is gaining confidence. When the time comes to make his league appearance, he must be ready. If he is here, it is for a reason, and we must make the most of him,” said the Barcelona Atletic manager after the match.

Caicedo joined Barcelona from LDU Quito on loan, with the club holding an option to make the transfer permanent for €2.5m.

The victory over L’Hospitalet was Barcelona Atletic’s first of the pre-season and offered Belletti a positive result as he continues to assess his squad. For Caicedo, it was a brief but promising introduction to life with the reserve team, with his ability to contribute defensively and offensively standing out during his debut.
