Zimbabwe midfielder Jonah Fabisch is closing in on a move to Golden Arrows, with the Kaizer Chiefs links that dominated early speculation now looking unlikely to materialise.

The 24-year-old Zimbabwe international arrived in South Africa on Wednesday, with initial reports suggesting he was poised to sign for an unnamed DStv Premiership club. Fabisch is understood to be in Durban and was seen at a Premier Soccer League club’s training base on Thursday morning, where he observed a session in the company of the club’s senior leadership.

Club sources, who requested anonymity as the transfer has not yet been officially announced, indicated that all signs point to an agreement already being in place.

“He looks like he has already signed because he was there with everything, and his agent was also there,” said a source familiar with the situation.

“They even introduced him to the coaching staff. That’s all I know at this stage, but it looks like he is joining.”

Chiefs speculation fades

Fabisch’s arrival in the country was first reported by FARPost, which stated on Wednesday that the midfielder was expected to finalise a deal with a top-flight side, without naming the club involved. That prompted immediate speculation, with fresh reports on Thursday morning linking him heavily with Kaizer Chiefs.

Supporters of the Soweto club, hopeful of a major midfield addition, quickly seized on the reports suggesting Naturena could be his next destination. However, information gathered since indicates that Chiefs are no longer frontrunners for his signature.

Sources close to the negotiations have now played down the likelihood of the Zimbabwean moving to Chiefs, stressing that the club currently hosting him in Durban is in “pole position” to secure his services.
