Jérémy Doku misses Belgium's World Cup match against Iran

Belgium will be without Belgian winger Jérémy Doku for Sunday’s World Cup meeting with Iran after the attacker suffered a setback in his recovery from a respiratory infection.

The absence comes as a significant blow for the Red Devils ahead of their second group-stage fixture, with Doku expected to miss the match after his condition worsened despite signs of improvement earlier in the week.

The Manchester United player had already been dealing with illness since arriving in the United States for the tournament. Although he appeared to be recovering, Belgian officials confirmed that he suffered a relapse on Saturday evening.

Doku’s health concerns first became apparent during Belgium’s opening match against Egypt, when he was substituted in the 83rd minute after struggling with the same respiratory problem.

Concerns over his condition increased when he missed a team training session in Los Angeles, raising doubts about his availability for the clash with Iran.

According to information released by the Belgian Football Association, the winger had travelled to the United States while recovering from a severe cold contracted in Belgium.

While his situation initially appeared to be improving, his condition deteriorated again in the build-up to Sunday’s fixture.

As a result, Belgium’s medical staff have decided to take a cautious approach.

Following what was described as a difficult night for the player, the decision was made to allow him to rest while undergoing treatment aimed at accelerating his recovery.

The primary objective is now to ensure that Doku is fully fit for Belgium’s final group-stage match against New Zealand.

Belgian technical director Vincent Mannaert confirmed the strategy being adopted by the national team.

“We’re letting him rest and we’re focusing on the third match.”

The decision reflects Belgium’s desire to avoid taking unnecessary risks with one of their most influential attacking players.

Doku’s pace and ability to create opportunities have made him an important figure for the national side, and his absence against Iran will require Belgium to adjust their plans.

While attention remains on securing a positive result in their second group match, the coaching staff will also be hoping the winger responds well to treatment over the coming days.

For now, Belgium must prepare for Iran without one of their key attacking options, while looking ahead to having Doku available again for the decisive final group fixture against New Zealand.
