Odilon Kossounou is on the verge of completing a permanent transfer to Atalanta, with the Italian club reportedly finalising terms with Bayer Leverkusen after a season-long loan spell.
The 24-year-old Ivorian defender joined Atalanta Bergamo last August on a temporary basis and is now expected to extend his stay in Serie A, according to journalist Nicolò Schira.
Despite Bayer Leverkusen’s firm stance during negotiations, particularly over the initial €25 million purchase clause, an agreement has reportedly been struck between the two clubs for a reduced fee.
Sources close to the discussions indicate that Atalanta will complete the deal for approximately €20 million. The agreement also includes a four-year contract for Kossounou, which will keep him at the Gewiss Stadium until June 2029.
Kossounou, who has previously played for Hammarby and Club Bruges before moving to Leverkusen, endured a season marred by injuries. Nevertheless, his contributions during his 23 appearances across all competitions were sufficient to convince Atalanta’s technical staff of his long-term value. He also registered two assists during the campaign, further showcasing his ability to contribute beyond his defensive duties.
Despite fitness setbacks, the Ivorian international’s presence in Gian Piero Gasperini’s system proved valuable when fit. His versatility and composure at the back offered Atalanta both depth and tactical flexibility — qualities the club is keen to secure on a permanent basis as they prepare for the new season.
The deal, once finalised, will mark a new chapter in Kossounou’s career. Having moved from Sweden to Belgium and then to the Bundesliga, his potential long-term commitment to Atalanta offers the stability he has not yet enjoyed at any previous club. The opportunity to settle in one of Europe’s most competitive leagues with a team regularly pushing for European qualification represents a pivotal step.
While no official announcement has yet been made by either club, all indications suggest the transfer will be formalised shortly. The move comes as part of Atalanta’s broader strategy to reinforce their defensive line ahead of a demanding campaign that includes domestic ambitions and European fixtures.
For Bayer Leverkusen, the sale represents a profitable outcome, particularly given that Kossounou’s opportunities in the Bundesliga had become increasingly limited. The German club will now look to reinvest in strengthening their squad for the upcoming season.
Kossounou’s transfer, once confirmed, also underscores the growing trend of Serie A clubs targeting younger players with top-league experience and strong development potential.
The Ivorian has already demonstrated his resilience and ability to adapt across different footballing cultures — qualities that Atalanta will be hoping to fully unlock as he embarks on the next phase of his career in Bergamo.
