István Kovacs to officiate landmark 1,000th World Cup match

FIFA has appointed Romanian official István Kovács to take charge of a historic moment in World Cup history, as he will oversee the 1,000th match ever played in the tournament.

The milestone fixture will see Tunisia lock horns with Japan in a Group F clash at Monterrey Stadium on 20 June during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Kovács will not work alone for the landmark occasion, as he will be assisted by compatriots Ferencz Tunyogi and Mihai Marica, who have both been named as assistant referees for the game.

The officiating team is completed by Costa Rica’s Juan Calderón, who has been appointed as fourth official, while Juan Carlos Mora will act as reserve assistant referee for the historic encounter.

The assignment marks another high-profile appointment for Kovács, who is regarded as one of Europe’s most experienced referees on the international stage.

With the World Cup reaching its 1,000th match, FIFA’s selection of a seasoned officiating crew underlines the importance of the occasion, as the global showpiece continues to add new chapters to its rich history.

The Tunisia-Japan clash is expected to draw significant attention not only for its competitive stakes in Group F, but also for its place in football history as a symbolic milestone for the tournament.
