Inter moved to the top of Serie A with a 2-0 win at Venezia, despite not scoring themselves, while Milan suffered a dramatic 4-2 home defeat by Bologna after conceding twice in 60 seconds.
The results left Inter on 25 points, while Milan dropped to fifth with 18 points.
Venezia’s defensive collapse hands Inter victory
Inter controlled much of the match in Venezia but had to wait until the closing stages to make their pressure count. When the breakthrough arrived, it came through an own goal by the home side.
Venezia defender Matias Moreno turned the ball into his own net in the 80th minute to put Inter ahead.
Only two minutes later, the same misfortune struck again. Moreno’s team-mate Ridwan Halhal also scored an own goal, extending Inter’s lead in the 82nd minute.
Venezia tried to respond, but there was not enough time to change the result. Inter left with three valuable points after receiving two costly gifts from the hosts’ defence in one of the most unusual victories of the Serie A season.
Bologna complete remarkable comeback at San Siro
Milan appeared to be in control after recovering from an early setback, but Bologna turned the match around with two goals in the space of one minute before adding a late fourth.
Bologna took the lead in the eighth minute when Samuel Mbangula finished after a pass from Nader Zortea.
Milan responded through Fadio Sisi, who levelled in the 14th minute. The same player struck again in the 27th minute after Fikayo Tomori had come on, giving the Rossoneri a 2-1 advantage at half-time.
The momentum changed dramatically after the interval. In the 61st minute, Milan defender David Bartesaghi accidentally put the ball into his own goal, bringing Bologna level.
Milan had barely recovered when Mbangula restored Bologna’s lead in the 62nd minute. The forward scored his second of the night after receiving a pass from Juan Miranda, completing a rapid turnaround from 2-1 down to 3-2 ahead.
The hosts pushed for another equaliser during the remaining stages, but they could not break through Bologna’s defence. Their chances of salvaging a result disappeared in the 86th minute when Mbangula completed his hat-trick.
The decisive fourth goal came after an accurate assist from Jens Odgaard, sealing a 4-2 victory for Bologna and ending Milan’s hopes of recovering from the collapse. It also completed a comeback that had begun with the visitors trailing 2-1 after Sisi’s double.
