Innocent Maela names Nkosikhona Ndaba as Orlando Pirates’ standout player

Former Orlando Pirates captain Innocent Maela says Nkosikhona Ndaba has impressed him more than any other player at the club this season.

Maela is now in his second season away from playing after ending his career, but remains involved with Pirates as an ambassador. That role gives him the opportunity to watch the squad closely, and he believes Ndaba has been the team’s most impressive performer so far.

The 27-year-old left-back, who previously played for Richards Bay, has made seven appearances in all competitions for the Buccaneers. He has also started each of Pirates’ past four Betway Premiership matches.

Maela said Ndaba’s performances had stood out despite strong competition for the position, including from Neo Rapoo, Simphiwe Masilela and Mthetheleli Mthiyane.

“(Nkosikhona) Ndaba, I think the boy has been excellent in that left back position. I am also impressed with (Neo) Rapoo. I think he has shown grit and he has shown that he can compete in that space,” Maela said.

“But for me, I think Ndaba has been really excellent. Obviously, there are other like (Simphiwe) Masilela and (Mthetheleli) Mthiyane. There is talent galore, but if I had to choose one – and I am not being biased because I used to play as a left back – it’s Ndaba.”

Maela believes Ndaba’s approach and simplicity on the ball could help him enjoy a long career. He also praised Rapoo and highlighted the influence of experienced winger Deon Hotto in helping Pirates’ younger players develop.

“I love how he approaches the game. I love how simple he plays the game. He is the kind of player that can play for long,” Maela said.

“I am really impressed and I just want to say he should keep on going. Same as Rapoo. Obviously, Deon (Hotto) has been there for long a very long time and he is experienced and I’m sure he is playing a huge role guiding these youngsters to excel and improve. But yeah, Ndaba should keep on going.”

Pirates will host Milford at Orlando Amstel Arena tonight in the last 16 of the Carling Knockout Cup. The fixture will be followed by the Soweto derby against Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium on Saturday.
