Ibrahim Maza put on a dazzling display for Bayer Leverkusen during their Champions League victory against Benfica Lisbon, earning the Man of the Match award at just 19 years old.

Coach Kasper Hjulmand was full of admiration for the young Algerian prodigy. “He’s had two fantastic months. For me, he’s truly a joy to coach. He’s attentive, shows up every day ready to learn, and improves quickly. Maza has a thirst for knowledge and is always focused,” shared Hjulmand.

The coach added, “He’s developed in a new position. There’s still room for growth, but his match was strong, and we’re very happy with him and his development. Coming from the 2. Bundesliga and performing at this level is fantastic.”

Asked if Maza will settle in midfield, Hjulmand remarked, “We’re exploring different options. He’s comfortable centrally; sometimes he must play faster and stay calm, but he’s versatile and I appreciate that.” Hjulmand noted healthy competition in his squad, saying, “He’s now a competitor for Rob Andrich, and internal competition is always positive.”

Maza’s rise signals the arrival of a hardworking and ambitious talent for Leverkusen and Algerian football.
