Hugo Ekitike hints at Cameroon switch ahead of 2025 AFCON

As the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations approaches, Hugo Ekitike has opened the door to a potential international switch that could see him don the colours of Cameroon, his father’s homeland.

The 23-year-old striker, currently with Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt and attracting interest from clubs like Arsenal, has made it clear that while representing France remains his primary ambition, he is prepared to play for the Indomitable Lions if overlooked by Didier Deschamps.

“Playing for Les Bleus remains my first dream,” Ekitike told Canal+ Sport Afrique. “But if France does not retain me, I will have no other choice but to defend the colors of Cameroon.”

Ekitike’s comments have sparked considerable debate among supporters, with some praising his openness and ambition, while others question the sincerity of his interest in Cameroon, viewing the country as a fallback rather than a first-choice commitment.

Born in France and having represented the French youth teams, Ekitike is still eligible to play for Cameroon at senior level.

With the AFCON set to begin in Morocco in December 2025, the timeline for a decision is fast approaching.

The striker’s fate may hinge on Deschamps’ next squad selection in October, when France resumes its 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.

Should France continue to overlook him, Ekitike could find a clear pathway to a prominent role in Cameroon’s squad.

The Central African nation’s forward line, led by seasoned veterans Vincent Aboubakar (33) and Bryan Mbeumo, remains in need of fresh energy and long-term successors.

Ekitike’s profile – pace, mobility, and goal-scoring instinct – could make him an immediate contender for a starting place.

His potential inclusion in Rigobert Song’s side would mark a significant addition ahead of a tournament in which Cameroon are expected to contend for the title.

While questions linger about his national allegiance, many Cameroonian supporters are eager to welcome a player of his calibre, particularly one with European top-flight experience.

For now, Ekitike’s international future remains in limbo, suspended between aspiration and pragmatism.

But with time running out and the AFCON looming, a decision could soon define not only his international career, but also reshape the attacking fortunes of whichever nation he ultimately chooses.
