Hugo Broos confirms final World Cup warm-up as Bafana Bafana prepare for Jamaica clash
Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has confirmed that South Africa will play one final friendly match before their FIFA World Cup campaign kicks off.
The team were held to a goalless draw by Nicaragua in their last outing before departing for the global tournament, a result Broos described as frustrating given the nature of the opposition.
The Belgian tactician revealed that Bafana will now face Jamaica on June 5, a fixture he believes will offer a clearer test of the squad ahead of their opening World Cup match against Mexico.
“We have another game on the 5th June against Jamaica. I hope that the opponent will play football against us, and that can be the first indication of the squad that will start against Mexico,” Broos told SABC Sport.
Despite the stalemate against Nicaragua, Broos insisted he was satisfied with his team’s overall performance, even though he felt the opposition’s defensive approach made the game difficult to assess.
“Surely, “I think we can be happy about the performance of the team even today, but if you play against such a negative opponent, then it becomes very difficult. Those people came here 90 minutes and defended, kicking the ball in front and then at the end injuries, one minute after the other, so yeah it was all very negative and for us very difficult,” Broos said.
He also pointed to a missed penalty as a key moment that could have changed the outcome.
“Yes, we missed a penalty when we scored there. I think we can score more goals also because then they will try something, but then the opponent didn’t try anything today except defending,” he added.
Meanwhile, South Africa has been housed in Group A alongside Mexico, South Korea and the Czech Republic.
