Hossam Hassan hails Spain draw as crucial World Cup test for Egypt
Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan has described his side’s goalless draw with Spain as far more than a routine friendly, calling it an important benchmark in their build-up to the World Cup.
The North African side held the world’s top-ranked team to a 0-0 stalemate at RCDE Stadium, a result Hassan praised alongside his players’ overall display.
“We are happy with the friendly against the world’s top-ranked team and pleased with the ideal atmosphere of the camp,” he said.
Hassan stressed the competitive intensity of the encounter, insisting it should not be viewed as a mere exhibition.
“A draw against a team of Spain’s stature is a good result. Today’s match was not a friendly — it was a very strong test ahead of the World Cup,” he added.
He also reserved praise for Egypt’s Europe-based contingent, highlighting key figures such as Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush for their contributions.
“I’m happy with Egyptian players in Europe such as Salah and Marmoush,” he said.
Outlining his long-term vision, the former international forward emphasised his commitment to building a stronger national team.
“My goal is to develop the team’s performance and the players, and I hope to build a strong team for Egyptian football,” he stated.
The result marks Egypt’s seventh draw under Hassan’s tenure, during which he has overseen 28 matches, recording 17 wins, eight draws and four defeats.
Across all competitions, his team has scored 43 goals and conceded 17.
Egypt will now turn their attention to the World Cup, where they have been drawn in Group G alongside Iran, Belgium and New Zealand.
