Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has addressed rumors of a rivalry with former Black Stars teammate Andre Ayew, firmly denying any animosity between them.
Gyan acknowledged the longstanding relationship he shares with Ayew, both of whom have been key figures in Ghana’s football history. The two players were central to Ghana’s campaigns at the 2010 FIFA World Cup and several Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments.
While Gyan captained the national team from 2012 to 2019, Ayew later took over the role in a dramatic turn, sparking speculation of a rivalry between the two.
Despite occasional rumors of tension, both players have previously spoken with respect for each other. However, Gyan’s latest comments suggest that external influences may have contributed to the perceived friction.
“Andre is a good person. He has that genuine love for me but he has been brainwashed because it benefits people,” Gyan stated during an Instagram Live session.
“That is what has brought the so called rivalry. Me, I am not a rival to anyone.”
Asamoah Gyan retired from football in 2023 while Andre Ayew is still actively playing but has been sidelined from the Black Stars by head coach Otto Addo.
