Erling Haaland has called on Manchester City’s players to remain united and positive as the club faces the possibility of a points deduction or expulsion from the Premier League.
City were found guilty of more than 100 alleged breaches of Premier League financial rules by an independent commission. The charges cover the period from 2009 to 2018, with the commission concluding that commercial contracts had been used to inflate revenue and reduce costs by more than £900m.
The club could now face a significant punishment, although the full consequences have not yet been determined. Manchester City deny the allegations.
Haaland joined City in 2022, after the period examined by the commission, but any sanction could affect the current squad and the club’s future.
Premier League leaders City return to action against Liverpool on Sunday in their first fixture since the verdict was made public. Haaland believes the players must concentrate on their football while supporting each other through the uncertainty.
“We have to stay positive, look ahead and try to win football games and try to enjoy the situation and win the game,” Haaland told the club’s website.
“We have to stick together, and we have to spread the love to each other.
“So yeah, stick together, enjoy the ride and smile.”
Haaland extended his contract with City until 2034 last year and has scored 169 goals in 205 appearances for the club.
However, the scale of any punishment could have a major effect on Manchester City’s ability to retain their leading players. A substantial points deduction or a lengthy absence from the Champions League could raise questions over whether the club can keep its biggest stars.
Europe’s leading clubs are likely to monitor the situation involving the Norway striker, who has established himself as one of the most prolific forwards in the game.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding City, Haaland said he remained deeply attached to the club and its supporters.
“I care a lot about City, I have to say,” he added.
“I care a lot about the fans because I’m a fan myself – I feel with them as well.”
