Gideon Mensah: Ghana left-back joins FC Cologne on free transfer after Auxerre exit
Ghanaian defender Gideon Mensah has completed a move to Bundesliga side FC Cologne on a free transfer after leaving French club AJ Auxerre at the end of his contract.
The 27-year-old left-back has signed a two-year deal with the German outfit, tying him to the club until 2028, as Cologne look to strengthen their options on the left flank ahead of the new campaign.
Mensah, who featured prominently for Auxerre last season, becomes Colognes latest reinforcement as they reshape their squad following a difficult domestic campaign.
Two-year contract for Ghana international
FC Cologne confirmed the transfer on social media, posting a welcoming message to the player alongside the words Done deal and a note in the local Kolsch dialect: Schon dat du do bes, Gideon, which translates roughly as Great that youre here, Gideon.
The club announced that the full-back has agreed terms for the next two seasons, providing fresh competition and experience in a key position on the left side of defence.
Mensah arrives as a free agent, meaning Cologne have secured an international defender with top-flight experience in both France and other European leagues without paying a transfer fee.
New challenge after Ligue 1 stint
Mensah made 31 appearances in all competitions for Auxerre during the 2025-2026 season, establishing himself as a regular starter and reliable presence in Ligue 1.
Having reached the end of his contract with the French side, the Ghanaian opted not to extend his stay and instead chose a new challenge in Germanys top division.
His move to Cologne marks the latest step in a career that has already taken him across several European leagues, and he will now seek to prove himself in the Bundesliga, one of the continents most competitive championships.
Cologne strengthen left flank
Colognes decision to bring in Mensah underlines the clubs intention to reinforce their left channel, both defensively and in attack, as they prepare for the upcoming season.
The Ghanaians pace and energy down the flank are expected to be key attributes for his new side, while his experience at international level and in high-pressure domestic fixtures could prove valuable in stabilising Colognes back line.
With pre-season preparations under way, Mensah is set to integrate quickly into the squad, as the club look to improve on last seasons struggles and reassert themselves in the Bundesliga.
