Ghanaian football legend Sammy Kuffour believes Bayern Munich will reach the UEFA Champions League final this season, citing the leadership of Vincent Kompany as a key factor.
Kuffour, who played for Bayern Munich for over a decade and won multiple titles, believes Kompany’s tactics and motivation can guide the team to European glory.
He remains one of Bayern’s most celebrated players. He joined the club as a teenager in 1993 and won six Bundesliga titles, four DFB-Pokal trophies, and the UEFA Champions League in 2001.
Kuffour revealed that he recently visited Bayern’s training ground and was impressed with Kompany’s approach.
“I spoke to Vincent Kompany when I was in Munich, and he was so positive about the team,” he told Flashscore.
“I went to the training ground and I was impressed by his tactics and the way the team builds up. He motivates his players to bring the best out of them,” he said.
Kompany’s appointment as Bayern’s head coach is historic, as he is the first black manager to lead the club.
The opportunity for the former Belgian international of Congolese descent has excited Kuffour.
“For Kompany to have that opportunity as the first black person to coach in the Bundesliga, and such a big team like Bayern Munich, is really great.”
Bayern Munich has advanced to the Champions League quarterfinals after eliminating Bayer Leverkusen with a dominant 5-0 aggregate win.
With the final set to take place at their home ground, the Allianz Arena, on May 31, Kuffour is hopeful that Bayern will make it to the title decider.
“The UCL final will be in Munich, and I’m very confident Bayern Munich will be there. I spoke to some of the fans in Germany, and they urged me to join the fan zone if Bayern gets to the final to cheer the players on. I wish they get to the final so I can support my team,” he added.
