Ghana FA explains rationale behind Carlos Queiroz’s appointment as new head coach
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has explained the reasoning behind the appointment of Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the Black Stars ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The experienced 72-year-old has been given a short-term contract to lead Ghana at the tournament, replacing Otto Addo, who was relieved of his duties after a run of inconsistent results despite successfully guiding the team to World Cup qualification.
Before Queiroz’s appointment was confirmed, several prominent coaches, including Pitso Mosimane, Kwesi Appiah and Paulo Bento, were reportedly considered for the role.
Speaking in an interview with Accra-based Asempa FM, GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum said the Portuguese tactician stood out to the selection committee due to his thorough assessment of the Black Stars.
According to him, Queiroz presented a detailed analysis of the team, covering their failed Africa Cup of Nations qualification campaign as well as their World Cup qualifying journey.
He added that the former Iran and Egypt coach demonstrated strong familiarity with Ghana’s player pool and outlined a clear plan aimed at guiding the team beyond the group stage at the World Cup.
Queiroz is expected to officially begin work with the squad next month, starting with a friendly against Mexico, followed by a final warm-up fixture against Wales on June 2.
Ghana, making its fifth appearance at the global tournament, has been drawn in Group L of the 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
The Black Stars will begin their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.
After group-stage exits in 2014 and 2022, Queiroz will be tasked with leading Ghana to a stronger performance on football’s biggest stage.
