Ghampani Lungu’s late winner gives Orlando Pirates emotional boost before AmaZulu test

Orlando Pirates forward Ghampani Lungu dedicated his extra-time winner against Durban City to his late father after revealing that the past two months had been particularly difficult for him.

The Zambia international came off the bench to score the decisive goal in Pirates’ 2-1 MTN8 quarter-final victory at Orlando Amstel Arena on Saturday. His strike arrived deep into extra time to send the Buccaneers through and give Lungu a deeply personal moment to remember.

“The goal really meant a lot because the past two months have really been tough after losing my father, so it was for him,” Lungu said.

Lungu joined Orlando Pirates from Siwelele at the beginning of the season and is expected to feature prominently again when the Sea Robbers return to league action against AmaZulu at Kings Park Stadium on Wednesday.

The match kicks off at 7.30pm, with Pirates looking to maintain the strong start they have made to the campaign. They opened their league schedule with a 2-0 home victory over newcomers Milford before overcoming Durban City in the MTN8.

Lungu’s goal completed a turnaround for Pirates in their cup tie and underlined the impact the utility forward can make from the bench. His contribution also came at a significant personal time, following the death of his father.

Pirates have historically held the advantage in meetings with AmaZulu. Of the 29 league encounters between the two sides, Orlando Pirates have won 15, while AmaZulu have recorded just one victory. The remaining 13 matches ended in draws.

That record gives Pirates confidence ahead of their visit to Kings Park Stadium, although AmaZulu will provide the next test as the Buccaneers attempt to build momentum in the league after their opening-day success.

For Lungu, the fixture follows an emotional weekend in which his first goal for the club in the MTN8 carried a meaning that went beyond securing progress in the competition. His focus now shifts to helping Pirates continue their positive start when they face Usuthu on Wednesday evening.
