Gamphani Lungu named Orlando Pirates Player of the Month after impressive debut month
Gamphani Lungu has been rewarded for an outstanding start to his Orlando Pirates career after supporters voted the Zambia international the club’s Player of the Month for August.
The attacker joined Pirates at the beginning of the 2026/27 season and has quickly established himself under coach Abdeslam Ouaddou. His early performances have helped the Soweto club maintain an unbeaten league record and reach the MTN8 final.
Lungu appeared in six matches during August, playing a total of 392 minutes across competitions. He scored three goals, supplied one assist and created eight chances, making a significant contribution in the final third.
His form has made an immediate impression at Orlando Pirates, with the club’s supporters selecting him as the standout performer during the opening month of the campaign.
“Gamphani Lungu is the newest face to be voted Orlando Pirates Player of the Month after winning the accolade in August,” the club stated.
“The Zambian international featured in six matches, clocking 392 minutes of action and making his presence felt in the final third. Hitting the ground running early on in his Bucs career, he has been chosen by the fans as the standout player in the opening month of the 2026/27 season.
“With three goals and one assist to his name, Lungu was directly involved in four goals, while also creating eight chances across competitions to help the Soweto Giants to an unbeaten start to their league campaign as well as a spot in the MTN8 final.
“He collected an emphatic 3,377 votes from the 6,750 votes, securing almost half of the total and comfortably finishing at the top of the poll. Defender Lebone Seema was the closest challenger, finishing second with 1,405 votes, while Oswin Appollis claimed third place with 848 votes.
“The rest of the field was made up by goalkeeper Sipho Chaine who came in fourth with 481 votes, with Thapelo Mokobodi receiving 421 and Tshepang Moremi rounding off the nominees with 218 votes.”
Lungu’s 3,377 votes represented almost half of the 6,750 ballots cast in the supporters’ poll. He finished well clear of his nearest rival, Lebone Seema, who collected 1,405 votes.
Oswin Appollis placed third with 848 votes, while goalkeeper Sipho Chaine received 481 votes to finish fourth. Thapelo Mokobodi was awarded 421 votes and Tshepang Moremi completed the list of nominees with 218.
The monthly award recognises Lungu’s rapid adaptation since arriving at Orlando Pirates and reflects his influence during the club’s strong opening weeks of the new season. His goals, creativity and involvement in four goals have been central to his early impact in the famous black and white.
