Galatasaray faces criticism for over-reliance on Victor Osimhen
Galatasaray’s reliance on Nigerian forward Victor Osimhen has drawn sharp criticism following their recent 2-2 draw against Eyüpspor in the Turkish Süper Lig.
Former Beşiktaş midfielder Sinan Engin expressed concern over the team’s apparent overdependence on Osimhen, arguing it limits their offensive versatility.
Osimhen, who joined the Istanbul club from Napoli during the summer transfer window, has been pivotal in Galatasaray’s attack, contributing nine goals and five assists in just 12 appearances.
However, speaking on Assist Analysis via Habersarikirmizi, Engin voiced doubts about the team’s strategy, suggesting it has become overly predictable.
“Too Focused on Osimhen”
Engin pointed out that Galatasaray players consistently direct their attacks through Osimhen, even when other options, such as Belgian veteran Dries Mertens, may be better positioned to score.
“What Galatasaray players will do is simple: they will go to the side and pass the ball to Victor Osimhen, but they can’t always do that,” he said.
He also criticized the on-field chemistry between Osimhen and Mertens, describing their style as “slow and deliberate,” which he believes hampers the team’s fluidity in attack.
Stellar Performance but Tactical Questions
Osimhen’s individual contributions have been undeniable, with the striker quickly becoming a fan favorite and a consistent threat in front of goal.
Despite his prolific form, the draw against Eyüpspor, coupled with Engin’s critique, has sparked a debate about whether Galatasaray’s offensive approach relies too heavily on the 24-year-old.
Dries Mertens, another high-profile name in the Galatasaray lineup, has been a key figure in the team’s attacking setup.
However, critics argue that his role is being overshadowed by the singular focus on feeding Osimhen, potentially limiting the team’s ability to exploit alternative attacking options.
Moving Forward
As Galatasaray continues to compete in both domestic and European competitions, the pressure is mounting on head coach Okan Buruk to address these concerns.
Balancing the contributions of star players like Osimhen and Mertens while maintaining a dynamic and unpredictable attack will be critical for the team’s long-term success.
With Galatasaray fans and analysts divided on the issue, the team will aim to strike the right balance in their offensive strategy as they look to strengthen their position in the Süper Lig standings.
