Gabon’s recent record raises concerns ahead of AFCON 2027 qualifiers
Gabon will have to confront familiar opponents with uncomfortable recent history after being drawn in Group A of the AFCON 2027 qualifiers alongside Morocco, Niger and Lesotho following the draw held in Cairo.
While the fixtures may feel familiar, recent results suggest a difficult challenge ahead for the Panthers, who have struggled to turn past encounters into positive outcomes.
According to reporting from Sonapresse, Gabon’s recent record against Morocco has been particularly one-sided.
The North African side dominated both meetings during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, winning 4-1 in Agadir and 5-1 in Franceville, exposing a significant gap between the two teams.
Matches against Lesotho have also proven challenging. Gabon were held to a 0-0 draw at home before suffering a 2-0 defeat on neutral ground, highlighting their difficulty in breaking down organised opposition.
Niger have also caused problems for the Panthers in recent encounters. In a friendly match played on 6 June 2025 in Benslimane, Morocco, Gabon were beaten 4-3 in a tightly contested but ultimately disappointing result.
Those results mean Morocco enter the group as clear favourites, with Gabon now expected to focus their efforts on competing for second place and a potential qualification spot.
For Gabon, improving their conversion of chances against Niger and Lesotho will be crucial if they are to progress.
While the opposition is familiar, the recent head-to-head record underlines the scale of the task facing the Panthers in the qualifying campaign.
The AFCON 2027 tournament is scheduled to take place in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania from 19 June to 17 July 2027.
Qualification will be played across three international windows, running from September to October 2026, November 2026, and March 2027.
Elsewhere in the draw, Senegal have been placed in Group J alongside Mozambique, Sudan and Ethiopia, setting up another competitive qualification path across the continent.
