Patrick Maswanganyi makes immediate impact with two assists for Al Khaldiya

Former Orlando Pirates playmaker Patrick Maswanganyi delivered another impressive performance for Al Khaldiya on Friday, providing two assists in a 3-1 victory over A’ali during only his second appearance for the Bahraini club.

The win moved Al Khaldiya back to the top of the log, with Maswanganyi playing a central role in the result after setting up two of his side’s goals.

Maswanganyi, 28, completed his move from Orlando Pirates last week as he began a new chapter in his career abroad. His arrival at Al Khaldiya was followed by an immediate introduction to the club’s supporters, with the midfielder making his debut on 27 August, the same day he was officially unveiled.

He marked that first appearance with a convincing 7-2 victory over Al Najma. Friday’s contest against A’ali brought another positive contribution, as Maswanganyi again demonstrated his ability to create opportunities and influence matches in the final third.

The two assists mean the former Pirates player has made a strong start to life at his new club, despite having joined only recently. Al Khaldiya’s victory also ensured that his individual contribution was matched by an important result in the race at the top of the standings.

Maswanganyi left Orlando Pirates after beginning the 2026/27 campaign with one goal and one assist in his first four matches. Those performances came at the start of a season in which he was preparing to continue his career outside South Africa.

During his three campaigns with the Buccaneers, Maswanganyi scored 28 goals and provided 21 assists in 120 appearances. His departure brought an end to a productive spell with the club, where he established himself as an attacking player capable of contributing both goals and chances for teammates.

Pirates have since moved to strengthen their options following his exit. The club re-signed Mohau Nkota on loan to help cover the departures of Maswanganyi and Relebohile Mofokeng.

The pair recorded a combined 34 goal involvements last season, leaving Pirates with significant attacking production to replace. Nkota’s return is therefore intended to provide additional cover as the Buccaneers adjust to the changes in their squad.

For Maswanganyi, however, the early signs in Bahrain have been encouraging. After scoring one goal and creating another during the opening stages of the 2026/27 season with Pirates, he has now followed that up with two assists in his first two matches for Al Khaldiya.

His latest display helped the club return to the summit of the log and maintained the strong beginning to his move abroad.
