Fulham remain without a win in the Premier League after conceding twice in the final minutes to lose 2-1 at Ipswich Town on Saturday.
Ryan Sessegnon gave Fulham the lead in the 55th minute, but Abdul Ouattara equalised in the 88th minute before Dara O’Shea completed Ipswich’s comeback in the second minute of added time.
The result lifted Ipswich Town to ninth in the table on nine points, while Fulham stayed at the bottom with only two points from the opening six rounds.
According to Spanish newspaper AS, Alvaro Arbeloa’s team had been close to securing their first league victory and deserved to do so for much of the match. However, Fulham’s efforts were undone during a brief late spell in which Ipswich relentlessly pressed for a way back into the contest.
Ouattara turned the game around with an excellent finish, before O’Shea added a second to erase the impact of Sessegnon’s fine goal. AS described the outcome as “a huge tragedy for Arbeloa and Fulham”, adding that the club remain unable to win in the Premier League and continue to sink towards the relegation places.
Sessegnon’s strike, scored from outside the penalty area, reflected Fulham’s superiority for most of the match. Ipswich struggled for long periods to compete with the London side for possession as Fulham controlled the tempo and found more effective positions across the pitch.
Bassey, Iwobi, King and Boub formed the core of Fulham’s midfield control, helping Arbeloa’s side dominate the ball and exploit spaces more effectively. Their understanding of where to attack also allowed Fulham to create a series of chances, although they repeatedly failed to convert them.
The home side only began to threaten in the closing stages, when it appeared their chances had disappeared. Ipswich pushed Fulham deep inside their own half, applying sustained pressure despite lacking structure and clear organisation.
That pressure eventually exposed the fragile defensive barrier built by Arbeloa. Ouattara’s goal broke through and wiped out much of the good work Fulham had produced until that point, while O’Shea’s late effort completed a result that highlighted the team’s inability to win even when their performance is stronger than that of their opponents.
No player missed more opportunities than Gonzalo Garcia, the only Spanish player to have started for Arbeloa so far. The former Real Madrid forward continues to struggle in front of goal and has scored only once in the Premier League, in the opening-round match against Chelsea.
Garcia has compensated for his lack of finishing with hard work, pressing and intelligent movement, creating space for his team-mates to exploit. But his continued goal shortage mirrors Fulham’s wider problem: promising performances have not produced the points needed to escape the bottom of the table.
