France and Spain are early favourites to win 2026 World Cup – Gerald Asamoah
Former Germany international of Ghanaian descent Gerald Asamoah has named France and Spain as the strongest contenders for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while also highlighting a competitive group of challengers that includes Germany, Argentina and Brazil.
The tournament, which will be staged across the United States, Canada and Mexico from June, is already generating growing debate about which nation will emerge victorious next summer.
Speaking to Flashscore, Asamoah offered a measured assessment of the leading sides, placing particular emphasis on the depth and balance of France and Spain.
“France is a strong side and also Spain,” said Asamoah, who was born in Mampong, Ghana, and moved to Germany at the age of 12 before becoming a trailblazer in German football.
He added that Germany should not be considered outright favourites, despite their pedigree.
“I wouldn’t put Germany right at the top, although they can always surprise. Then you have Argentina, with great team spirit, especially with Lionel Messi. Brazil are always unpredictable, you never quite know what you’ll get from them,” he said.
“But if you ask me, I think it could come down to France and Spain. Spain, in particular, are very good at building a team.”
Asamoah made history in 2001 as the first Africa-born Black player to represent Germany at senior level. He earned 43 caps, scored six goals, and featured in two World Cups, finishing runner-up in 2002 and third at the 2006 tournament on home soil.
The 2026 edition of the World Cup will run from June 11 to July 19, with expectations already mounting for one of the most competitive tournaments in recent memory.
