Pape Matar Sarr joins Juventus from Tottenham in potential £26m deal

Pape Matar Sarr has completed a move from Tottenham to Juventus on loan for the 2026/27 season, with the Italian club holding an option to buy that will become mandatory if certain conditions are met.

Tottenham confirmed the transfer on their official X account during the final days of the summer transfer window. The Senegal international leaves north London after five years with the club, having made more than 140 appearances.

According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, the agreement could be worth about £26m in total. Juventus will initially pay approximately £1.7m for the loan, while the deal includes a further £24m purchase clause.

That clause will become compulsory if Juventus qualify for either the UEFA Champions League or the UEFA Europa League, provided Sarr features in at least 50% of the team’s matches.

The arrangement gives Juventus the opportunity to assess the 23-year-old during the season before completing a permanent transfer, while Tottenham could eventually receive a fee significantly higher than the £16.9m they paid to sign him from Metz in 2021.

Sarr’s departure follows a reduction in his midfield role under Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi. The Premier League club strengthened its options in that area during the summer, adding Sandro Tonali and Matheus Fernandes to a group that already includes Conor Gallagher, Rodrigo Bentancur, Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall.

With competition for places increasing, Sarr expressed a desire to leave Tottenham in search of more regular playing time. His move to Turin now brings an end to his spell in north London and provides Juventus with another midfield option for the 2026/27 campaign.

Tottenham’s confirmation means the transfer has been completed as a loan rather than an immediate permanent sale, although the conditions attached to the purchase clause could result in Juventus signing Sarr outright.

The Senegal midfielder joined Tottenham from Metz in 2021 and spent five years on the club’s books before making the switch to Serie A. His record of more than 140 appearances for Tottenham reflects his long association with the club, despite his position in the midfield pecking order falling after the arrival of several new options.

For Tottenham, the agreement creates the possibility of recovering around £26m from a player signed for £16.9m. For Juventus, the deal offers a route to a permanent transfer if the club achieves the required European qualification and Sarr reaches the specified appearance threshold.
