Morocco face World Cup worry after Chadi Riad injury
Morocco’s preparations for the 2026 World Cup have been disrupted by concern over the fitness of defender Chadi Riad, who was forced off injured during Crystal Palace’s match against Brentford.
The centre-back’s condition is now being closely monitored, with the injury coming at a crucial stage in his bid to secure a place in Morocco’s squad for the tournament, which begins in less than a month.
Riad went down in the 73rd minute of the game after a challenge involving Dango Ouattara, clutching his left leg in visible pain before being withdrawn from play.
The setback is particularly frustrating for the 21-year-old, who had only recently begun to establish himself in Crystal Palace’s starting line-up after a season previously disrupted by fitness problems.
His injury represents another interruption in what had been an encouraging period of progress at club level, as he sought to build consistency and strengthen his case for international selection.
For Morocco head coach Mohamed Ouahbi, the situation adds further uncertainty to defensive planning ahead of the World Cup.
Riad is regarded as an important part of the national team’s long-term defensive structure, valued for his ability to operate on the left side of central defence as well as his composure in possession.
His passing ability and tactical awareness had made him a strong candidate for a role in the squad, either as a starter or a key backup option.
Concerns have also been raised over the fitness of Nayef Aguerd, further complicating Morocco’s defensive options at a critical stage of preparation.
The timing of Riad’s injury therefore adds to growing worries within the camp, as the coaching staff assess the availability of key players ahead of football’s biggest tournament.
With the World Cup approaching rapidly, Morocco now face an anxious wait to determine the extent of the defender’s injury and whether he will recover in time to be considered for selection.
