Ibrahim Maza and Leverkusen miss out on top-four finish after final-day frustration
Bayer Leverkusen have missed out on a place in next season’s Champions League after being held to a draw by Hamburger SV on the final day of the Bundesliga season, finishing sixth in the table and dropping into the Europa League.
The result ended any remaining hopes for Ibrahim Maza and his teammates of breaking into the top four, as the club required a win combined with favourable results elsewhere to keep their Champions League ambitions alive.
However, the decisive outcomes elsewhere ensured those hopes were extinguished. VfB Stuttgart secured a victory over Eintracht Frankfurt to protect fourth place and confirm their qualification for Europe’s elite competition.
Hoffenheim, despite a defeat, maintained fifth position and will also feature in the Europa League next season.
Attention also turned to the DFB Pokal final, where Bayern Munich face VfB Stuttgart. With both finalists already qualified for the Champions League through league positions, the allocation of the cup’s European spot has shifted, ultimately benefiting Bayer Leverkusen.
As a result, they will compete in the Europa League alongside Hoffenheim.
For Leverkusen, the campaign ends in frustration given the late-season stakes, with the draw on the final matchday proving costly in their pursuit of a top-four finish.
Despite the disappointment, there were positives on an individual level for Ibrahim Maza. The Algerian midfielder, in his first season with Bayer Leverkusen, gained valuable experience and made his debut in the Champions League earlier in the campaign, featuring in a run that concluded at the quarter-final stage against Arsenal, who progressed to the final.
While the club’s overall target of Champions League qualification has not been achieved, Maza’s development over the course of the season has been a notable storyline.
His progress will remain a point of focus as Leverkusen prepare for their Europa League campaign next season, even as questions linger over how the team responds to missing out on Europe’s top competition.
