The opening match will feature CF Mounana and Missille FC at the Monedan stadium in Libreville. This marks the restart of the professional championship after a hiatus caused by club owners’ demands for overdue state subsidies, which had been pending for six months.
According to Afrikfoot.com, quoting Bosco Alaba Fall, the president of the association of first and second division clubs, there has been progress in resolving the subsidy issue, with the state having already disbursed part of the owed amount. “There is the beginning of a solution, and the matches resume this Friday,” announced Alaba Fall.
The halt in club activities posed a serious threat to the championship calendar, which must conclude no later than May 25, 2014, considering the overlap with the FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Faced with the risk of FIFA sanctions, governing bodies exerted pressure on the government to expedite the release of the long-awaited subsidies.
