FIFA lifts Otamendi suspension ahead of Argentina’s World Cup opener against Algeria
Nicolás Otamendi has been cleared to feature in Argentina’s opening match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after FIFA overturned his suspension, just one month before the tournament begins.
The decision means the 38-year-old defender, who plays for SL Benfica, will now be available for Argentina’s Group C clash against Algeria on June 17 in Kansas City.
Otamendi was initially expected to miss the opener after being sent off during Argentina’s final World Cup qualifier against Ecuador on September 10. However, the Argentine Football Association successfully appealed to FIFA, requesting a review of the disciplinary sanction.
In its explanation, FIFA stressed the importance of ensuring that teams arrive at the World Cup with their strongest possible squads, while still upholding disciplinary standards.
“The final stage of the World Cup represents the biggest event in international men’s football, showcasing the highest standards of the sport. Ensuring that member associations participate with the best possible squads, while maintaining disciplinary integrity, is essential to preserving the quality, fairness, and international appeal of the competition,” the governing body stated.
The ruling is a major boost for defending champions Argentina, with Otamendi regarded as a key figure in coach Lionel Scaloni’s defensive setup. The veteran centre-back has earned over 130 caps for the national team and remains an experienced leader in the squad.
The decision also comes alongside similar disciplinary adjustments affecting other players ahead of the tournament.
Moisés Caicedo, who was also sent off during qualification, will now be eligible to play for Ecuador in their opening match against Ivory Coast on June 15 in Philadelphia.
In addition, Tarek Salman has also benefited from a lifted suspension and will be available for Qatar when they face Switzerland on June 13 in their Group opener.
The developments have reshaped early World Cup squad plans, with key players now returning to contention just weeks before football’s biggest tournament kicks off.
