Fenerbahçe target Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou after standout World Cup displays

Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou has reportedly emerged as a transfer target for Turkish giants Fenerbahçe following another impressive FIFA 2026 World Cup campaign with the Atlas Lions.

According to Turkish outlet Fanatik, via French publication Foot Mercato, the Istanbul club has identified the Moroccan international as one of its priority options should first-choice goalkeeper Ederson leave this summer.

The reported interest follows another outstanding tournament from Bounou, whose performances helped Morocco reach the quarter-finals for the second consecutive FIFA World Cup.

Bounou shines on the biggest stage

The 35-year-old was one of Morocco’s standout performers throughout the tournament, producing a series of crucial saves as the Atlas Lions enjoyed another memorable run.

Bounou saved a penalty from Kylian Mbappé during Morocco’s quarter-final defeat to France and had earlier denied Dutch players in the penalty shootout victory over the Netherlands in the Round of 32.

His displays also drew praise from France goalkeeper Mike Maignan, who described the Moroccan shot-stopper as “a top goalkeeper” after their World Cup meeting.

Al Hilal contract could complicate move

While Fenerbahçe are reportedly keen to bring Bounou back to European football, completing the transfer may not be straightforward.

The Morocco international remains under contract with Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal until 2028 and has established himself as one of the club’s key players since arriving from Sevilla.

A move to Turkey would also mark Bounou’s return to European competition after a successful spell with Sevilla, where he won the UEFA Europa League twice.

If the transfer goes ahead, the experienced goalkeeper would reunite with fellow Morocco international Sofyan Amrabat at Fenerbahçe, following the midfielder’s return to the Turkish club after his loan spell.

Neither Fenerbahçe nor Al Hilal has commented publicly on the reported interest in the Moroccan goalkeeper.
