Felix Magath defends Eduardo Camavinga after red against Bayern

German coaching great Felix Magath believes Eduardo Camavinga should never have been sent off in Real Madrid’s dramatic 4-3 Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich.

The French midfielder entered the match in the 62nd minute, replacing Moroccan forward Brahim Diaz, but his night quickly turned sour as he picked up a yellow card in the 78th minute and a second booking in the 86th minute to leave Madrid with ten men.

“It was a wrong decision. A sending-off is far too harsh; I see no justification for the decision to dismiss the player,” Magath insisted, arguing that the referee overreacted to Camavinga’s challenges.

At the same time, the former Bayern boss stressed that the dismissal should not be used as an excuse for Madrid’s exit. “That being said, to be honest, the red card was not the deciding factor in this tie. We are talking about two matches – 180 minutes, not 8 or 10. Bayern was better overall and deserved to go through,” he said.

Magath’s view will offer some comfort to Camavinga, who now faces criticism and suspension despite influential cameos throughout Madrid’s European campaign.
