Barcelona scouting call vindicated as Sporting CP striker Luis Suarez thrives

FC Barcelona identified Sporting CP forward Luis Suarez as a possible alternative to Julian Alvarez during the closing stages of the summer transfer window, and the Colombian has since strengthened the case for the club’s interest with a prolific run of form.

Suarez was not considered one of the leading names at the start of the transfer market, but his profile became increasingly relevant as Barcelona explored options for the centre-forward position. The club were looking for an alternative in case a deal for Alvarez could not be completed, and Suarez emerged as an unexpected candidate.

Spanish newspaper Sport reported that the search intensified after Barcelona’s plans for Alvarez failed to materialise. The club’s sporting department, led by Deco, considered Suarez among the possible solutions for the attack.

Journalist Fabrizio Romano said the Colombian had impressed Barcelona’s sporting management. However, the interest did not develop into formal negotiations. Suarez’s release clause is set at 80m euros, while Sporting CP were unwilling to reduce their valuation of a player they regard as central to their team.

The Portuguese club’s determination was underlined by its rejection of substantial offers from both the Premier League and the Saudi Pro League. Those financial demands and Sporting CP’s stance made it difficult for Barcelona to turn their interest into a serious move.

Suarez’s numbers nevertheless demonstrate why he attracted attention. He scored 38 goals and provided nine assists in 53 appearances across all competitions last season, underlining his ability to make a decisive contribution in front of goal.

Those figures came despite the Portuguese league being regarded as below Europe’s leading domestic competitions. Suarez also scored five times in the UEFA Champions League, a competition that brings together many of the world’s strongest clubs.

The forward is now attempting to build on that record this season after joining Sporting CP’s pre-season preparations late because of his involvement with Colombia at the World Cup. He began the first two league games on the substitutes’ bench, but returned to the starting line-up from the third round onwards.

His increased involvement has coincided with a return to strong form in the number nine role. Suarez has scored four goals in his past three matches, finding the net against Alverca before scoring twice against Rio Ave.

He then scored and supplied an assist against Nacional at the weekend, continuing a sequence that has highlighted his instinct inside the penalty area. The recent performances have reinforced the view that Suarez possesses the natural finishing ability required at the highest level.

Barcelona’s interest remains only an expression of admiration rather than a completed transfer or advanced agreement. Yet with Suarez producing consistently for Sporting CP, Deco’s decision to identify him as a potential alternative to Alvarez increasingly appears to have been based on sound judgement.
