FC Barcelona assess Azzedine Ounahi as midfield option during Frenkie de Jong absence
FC Barcelona have identified Azzedine Ounahi as one of the players they are considering to strengthen their midfield after Frenkie de Jong was ruled out for several months with an injury.
The Morocco international has emerged as a possible alternative after appearing to be close to a move to Saudi Arabia. Despite receiving a financially attractive offer from Al Ittihad, revealed exclusively by Africafoot, Ounahi has yet to accept a transfer to the Gulf and remains undecided about his next move.
According to El Chiringuito, Ounahi’s name is now on the list of midfielders being assessed by the Catalan club. The 25-year-old, who plays for Girona, impressed during the 2026 World Cup and has attracted attention for his technical ability, his skill in escaping pressure and his capacity to move his team forward in possession.
Those qualities are understood to fit the profile FC Barcelona are seeking as they attempt to manage the loss of De Jong. The Netherlands midfielder’s absence for several months has created a significant problem in the centre of the pitch, prompting the club to review the options available in the transfer market.
No formal approach has yet been made for Ounahi. FC Barcelona’s recruitment team are continuing to assess a number of possible solutions, although the Moroccan is regarded as one of the leading names under consideration. The shortlist remains open and the club have not decided whether to pursue the player.
Ounahi’s situation is also being monitored by several other clubs. His experience in La Liga and his ability to operate in a possession-based system have helped make him an attractive target, while his previous spell with Olympique de Marseille adds to his experience at a high level of European football.
The midfielder has not made a final decision about his future, despite the interest from Al Ittihad and other potential suitors. His reluctance to commit to a move to Saudi Arabia means several outcomes remain possible, including a continued stay in European football.
The coming weeks could prove important. Should FC Barcelona decide to accelerate their interest, Ounahi could have the opportunity to join one of Europe’s most prestigious clubs. However, the Catalan side must first determine whether he is the right solution for the midfield vacancy created by De Jong’s injury, while competition from other clubs is expected to remain.
Ounahi is currently valued at 10m euros by Transfermarkt.
