Haaland fires Manchester City to seventh straight win as Chelsea’s Neto strikes twice

Manchester City responded to their midweek Champions League defeat by beating Ipswich Town 3-2 at home on Saturday, with Erling Haaland’s two goals preserving their 100% Premier League record and place at the top of the table.

Paris St Germain handed Enzo Maresca’s side their first significant defeat of the season on Wednesday, but City recovered to make it seven league victories from seven matches. Their future remains uncertain off the pitch after appealing against a ruling that they breached 114 Premier League financial rules. The club has always denied wrongdoing.

Phil Foden put City ahead, but Daizen Maeda quickly equalised for Ipswich. Haaland restored the hosts’ lead before half-time with a header from Mateo Kovacic’s cross.

The Norway striker added his second in the 69th minute, driving beyond Abdoul Ouattara before finding the bottom corner. An offside decision denied him a hat-trick, while Zian Flemming converted a stoppage-time penalty to give Ipswich hope. City held on for the points.

Neto double helps Chelsea past Everton

Chelsea beat Everton 2-0 in the early match, although their victory was overshadowed by a head injury to goalkeeper Emi Martinez.

Everton frustrated Chelsea during a physical first half which featured five yellow cards. But the visitors needed only 43 seconds after the interval to take the lead, Jorrel Hato cutting the ball back from the byline for Pedro Neto to finish.

Martinez’s collision with Jarrad Branthwaite caused a lengthy stoppage. The Argentina goalkeeper was eventually carried from the pitch on a stretcher, with 11 minutes added on.

Neto completed his double in the 90th minute, calmly shooting into the bottom corner after Jordan Henderson’s free-kick struck the wall. The result gave Everton their first defeat of the season.

“What we know is he (Martinez) left the stadium conscious and right now he is in the hospital doing precautionary tests,” Xabi Alonso said. “It was concussion but more than that I saw only one clip. Hopefully it won’t be too bad but we need to wait.”

Martinez’s injury allowed 21-year-old Mike Penders to make his Premier League debut. He helped Chelsea keep their first league clean sheet in 23 matches.

“We need a clean sheet, to be honest. I think we did a very good game. Emi deserved this, Mike did as well,” Alonso added.

Liverpool recover at Brentford

Liverpool came from behind to win 2-1 at Brentford, who lost two players to red cards.

Keane Lewis-Potter deservedly put the unbeaten hosts ahead before Yehor Yarmolyuk was dismissed shortly before half-time for head-butting Jeremy Jacquet at a Liverpool corner. Referee John Brooks reviewed the incident on the VAR monitor before showing the Ukrainian a straight red card.

Victor Munoz equalised in the 62nd minute with a left-footed finish after cutting inside. Alexander Isak then put Andoni Iraola’s side ahead eight minutes later, converting Bradley Barcola’s assist.

Brentford finished with nine men after Vitaly Janelt received a second yellow card for fouling substitute Rio Ngumoha. Liverpool moved above Brentford into fifth on 12 points, while Chelsea are fourth on 13.

Fulham also claimed their first league win of the season, beating Hull City 1-0 at home. Alex Iwobi’s 33rd-minute goal lifted Alvaro Arbeloa’s side from the bottom to 15th.

Newcastle United host Aston Villa later on Saturday.
