Farès Chaïbi confident Algeria can shine at 2026 World Cup
Algeria midfielder Farès Chaïbi has spoken openly about his pride in representing his country and the ambitions of the national team ahead of the 2026 World Cup in the United States, where the team will begin their campaign against reigning champions Argentina.
Speaking to AL24 News, the Eintracht Frankfurt attacking midfielder reflected on his return to the national team camp as Algeria prepare for upcoming friendly matches against the Netherlands and Bolivia, describing the experience as both an honour and a key stage in their World Cup build-up.
“It’s always an honor, whether it’s before the World Cup, for a friendly, or any other match. Representing Algeria is always special,” he said.
Chaïbi added that the current training camp feels like an important step in preparations: “It’s a mini-camp before the World Cup. We’re preparing well to be ready.”
The former Toulouse player also highlighted the strong competition within the Algeria squad under coach Vladimir Petković, saying it plays a positive role in pushing players to improve and perform at a higher level.
“We are a great African nation and we have very good players. This competition pushes us to improve. If we go to the World Cup, it’s for a collective goal,” he explained.
Chaïbi also spoke about his personal connection to Algeria, revealing that his decision to represent the national team came from a strong emotional attachment.
“In my heart, I knew it was Algeria and nothing else,” he said. He added that he had followed the national team closely during their major achievements, including their Africa Cup of Nations success, which helped strengthen his bond with the country.
The midfielder also addressed a more difficult period following the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, when he was temporarily absent from the squad. He described it as a misunderstanding that was later resolved through discussion, stressing the importance of perseverance in professional football.
“In football, that’s the only thing that pays off. You can have all the talent in the world, but if you don’t work hard, you won’t succeed,” Chaïbi said.
Looking ahead to the World Cup, he expressed excitement about facing Argentina in Algeria’s opening match, calling it a significant challenge against the world champions. He also acknowledged the logistical demands of travelling between host cities but insisted the squad will be well prepared.
Finally, Chaïbi delivered a message to supporters, underlining the team’s determination to represent the country with pride: “We will do everything to make you proud and give our all for the Algerian people.”
