Former Algerian international Faouzi Ghoulam has voiced his concerns over AC Milan’s struggles, citing a lack of consistency both on and off the pitch.
Now a pundit for Sky Sports Italia, the ex-Napoli left-back believes the Rossoneri are far from their best, with recent performances falling short of expectations.
Milan’s Struggles Go Beyond Results
Milan’s form has been under scrutiny, having won just one of their last five matches across all competitions. Ghoulam argues that the club’s issues extend beyond their results, suggesting deeper structural problems within the organization.
“Milan lacks continuity, and not just in terms of performance,” Ghoulam stated. “Even off the pitch, the club seems different.
For a historic club like Milan, more is expected. I understand it’s not easy to manage, but something is missing.”
Bennacer and Tonali’s Absence Leaves a Void
Reflecting on Milan’s Serie A triumph in the 2021-22 season, Ghoulam emphasized the crucial role played by Ismaël Bennacer and Sandro Tonali in midfield. He believes their partnership was a key factor in the club’s success, a balance that has since disappeared.
“That Milan side was fantastic,” he said. “It’s no coincidence they won the league. Just look at what Bennacer and Tonali contributed that season and how they complemented each other. Today, that equilibrium no longer exists.”
A Diminished Offensive Threat
Ghoulam also pointed to Milan’s current lack of attacking balance, noting that players like Theo Hernández, Rafael Leão, and Ante Rebić once provided a dynamic edge that seems to be missing.
The Algerian further compared Milan’s situation to that of Napoli, where he spent much of his career. He believes his former club is in a much stronger position under Antonio Conte, particularly in their pursuit of Champions League qualification.
Ghoulam’s remarks underline Milan’s ongoing struggles and highlight the impact of Bennacer’s absence, as the club continues to search for stability and a return to its former dominance.
