Manchester City fear they may have to face Liverpool without Erling Haaland on Sunday after the striker sustained a fitness problem while playing for Norway.
Haaland was withdrawn during the second half of Norway’s 2-1 defeat by Portugal at Estadio do Dragao. He appeared to be limping as he left the pitch after asking to be substituted.
The extent of the injury has not yet been confirmed, but the uncertainty places Haaland’s involvement at Anfield in doubt. The Norway forward had started all four of his country’s matches over the previous three weeks before the problem emerged.
His potential absence would be a major concern for City, who do not have a recognised replacement for him in their squad.
Manager Pep Guardiola is already certain to be without Phil Foden for the match. The England international will serve the final game of a three-match suspension imposed after his controversial dismissal in the Manchester derby.
There is better news over Antoine Semenyo, who is expected to be fit to face Liverpool. The forward withdrew from Ghana’s squad because of swelling in his leg, but has now had three weeks to recover.
Nico O’Reilly is also a doubt for City. The versatile left-back left England’s camp during the international break, although the nature of his injury has not been disclosed.
O’Reilly has returned to Manchester City to undergo assessment. The club have not provided a further update on whether he will be able to travel to Merseyside.
