English-Nigerian fullback Jayden Meghoma joins Rangers on season-long loan

Brentford defender Jayden Meghoma has sealed a season-long loan move to Scottish giants Rangers, becoming the latest addition to Philippe Clement’s squad ahead of a campaign that promises domestic and European challenges.

Born in England but eligible to represent Nigeria through his heritage, Meghoma is regarded as one of Brentford’s brightest defensive prospects.

The 19-year-old impressed during pre-season with the Bees but faces stiff competition at left-back, prompting the Premier League club to sanction a temporary switch north of the border.

Brentford director of football Phil Giles explained the reasoning behind the move, highlighting the benefits of exposing Meghoma to a demanding football environment.

“Jayden had a positive pre-season and we have seen the benefits of a good loan move for him last season,” Giles said.

“The competition for places at full-back is very strong and we thought a loan might be the best way for him to develop this season. When this option came up, we thought it would be great for him.”

The director stressed that Rangers’ stature makes the loan an ideal test for the teenager.

“Jayden will be going into a high-pressure environment with the chance to compete for trophies and play European football.

“It is a great opportunity for him at a big club and I am sure he will relish it. We look forward to seeing how Jayden develops over the next year and welcoming him back at the end of the season.”

Meghoma, who is contracted to Brentford until 2028, previously gained first-team experience during a loan spell away from the club last season.

His move to Ibrox is expected to provide consistent minutes at a high level, while giving Rangers additional depth in a position where competition has been a recurring challenge.
