Emiliano Martinez says leaving Aston Villa for Chelsea helped him overcome the pain of Argentina’s World Cup final defeat by Spain.
The 34-year-old completed a £7.5m move to Stamford Bridge towards the end of the transfer window, ending a successful spell at Villa Park.
Martinez had previously been linked with Juventus, but Chelsea moved for the Argentina international after concerns grew about Robert Sanchez following the start of the season.
Sanchez has since joined Como on loan, leaving Martinez as Chelsea’s first-choice goalkeeper.
However, Martinez says the transfer was motivated by more than a change of club. He wanted a fresh beginning after Argentina lost the World Cup final 1-0 to Spain in the United States.
“It took a lot out of me after losing a World Cup final; the pain stayed with me for a long time,” Martinez told ESPN Argentina.
“I needed a fresh start at my club to get over the heartache I felt after that final.
“I come here (international duty) and honestly feel great, happy, full of energy, and that’s what matters most.”
‘Changing clubs helped me mentally’
Speaking to TyC Sports, Martinez explained how long it took him to process the defeat and why he believed a move was necessary.
“It took me a while to think; losing the World Cup final hurt a lot.
“I tried changing clubs to mentally refresh myself, and I succeeded. I came here (to Chelsea), and it was the best thing I did because I feel useful, fast, and good.
“In the end, I have to represent my country, my family, and I have to do my best,” he concluded.
Martinez spent several successful years with Aston Villa, helping the club win the Europa League and earning recognition as one of the leading goalkeepers in world football.
He was also involved in Argentina’s run to two World Cup finals. Their most recent campaign ended in disappointment, with Spain securing victory in the showpiece in the United States.
Martinez has since made clear that his focus is on winning trophies with Chelsea. His arrival, however, has not yet improved the club’s defensive record.
Chelsea have conceded more goals than any other Premier League side this season, while Martinez is still waiting to record his first clean sheet.
