Egypt’s World Cup 2026 core nearly settled as goalkeeper choice nears decision – Hossam Hassan

Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan has revealed that his technical staff are close to finalising the squad blueprint for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, including a near-confirmed decision on the team’s starting goalkeeper.

In an interview, Hassan said the coaching project is now at an advanced stage, with most of the “main elements” of the Pharaohs already identified.

He stressed that his approach is built on original ideas and a distinct coaching identity, rather than imitation, adding that his appointment came after years of work and sustained public trust.

The Egypt coach added that his focus remains firmly on performance rather than contractual matters, insisting his priority is to deliver results that meet the expectations of supporters.

He also acknowledged the gap between locally based players and their Europe-based counterparts, particularly in terms of experience and competitive exposure.

Hassan reflected on recent challenges faced by the squad, noting dips in form and confidence among several key players, including Imam Ashour, Mohamed El Shenawy, Mostafa Mohamed, Mohamed Hany and Ramy Rabia, while praising the technical staff’s work in restoring confidence and stabilising performances.

He said Egypt’s recent run of fixtures has been particularly demanding but credited the team’s discipline and work ethic for maintaining positive results, arguing that unbeaten qualification campaigns are never achieved by chance.

Looking ahead, Hassan confirmed that the backbone of the squad for the World Cup is already in place, although final adjustments will depend on players’ physical and technical condition closer to the tournament.

He reiterated that the starting goalkeeper has been identified in principle, but the final call remains open.

Recalling his playing career, Hassan referenced Egypt’s historic qualification for the 1990 World Cup, describing it as one of the defining moments of his life in football.

He also expressed pride in being recognised as one of the game’s enduring figures, including his honour from former FIFA president Sepp Blatter.

He concluded by stressing the importance of emotional control and professionalism on the touchline, noting that while passion is central to football, the national team coach must always project composure befitting Egyptian football on the global stage.
